Description
The land was bought by the Spaniard José Raventós, who with the dream of being able to reproduce zarzuelas and operettas, decided to use the land for the construction of the current theater. José Fabio Garnier Ugalde, playwright and architect, designs the theater. The construction takes place on February 8, 1927; to conclude with the inauguration on October 7, 1928 with the representation of the Compañía de Operetas de Esperanza Iris. In 1960 a new gallery is added, a new cinemascope screen is also included. Some seven years later, in 1967, on the morning of April 23, a fire broke out and destroyed the room. At the beginning of the seventies, the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports came up with the idea of buying the theater and renovating it, which was achieved some time later. In December 1981 there is a pre-opening of the theater, but shortly after the access to the public is closed to finish the restoration.

The reopening takes place on March 6, 1985; and on April 7 of the following year, the official government newspaper, "La Gaceta", announces Law 7023 that gives the Melico Salazar Theater the position of "Specialized Cultural Institution" of the Costa Rican State.
