How to arrive and leave

The main city of the Pacific Coast is Puntarenas, 130 Km to the west of San José along a paved highway. The average temperature of the coast throughout the year is between 22ºC to 32ºC.
Shortest route by road from San José to Puntarenas, the distance is 96 km and the approximate duration of the trip is 1h 34 min.

 

By Bus

Empresarios Unidos + 506 2221-6600 https://www.eupsacr.com/ in San José + 506 2661-2158 in Puntarenas. The journey from San José takes two hours and costs 3 US$. The buses leave from the terminal as soon as the bus is filled from 16th Street, on the corner with 10th and 12th Avenue.  In Puntarenas, the buses for San José leave from the terminal on 2nd Street, to the north of Paseo de los Turistas. The first bus leaves at 04:30 a.m and the last bus leaves at 08:00 p.m.

 

Terminal de Autobuses a: Monteverde-Esparza-Miramar-Guacimal-Tilarán-Liberia.
Diagonal to the beach and the San Jose bus terminal, there is a bus stop where buses leave to many nearby villages.There are 15 daily buses that go to Miramar, close to the Wildlife Refuge of Peñas Blancas and others to Esparza that leave every hour. With departures to Liberia 04:40 a.m, 05:30 a.m, 07:30 a.m, 09:30 a.m, 11:00 a.m, 12:30 p.m and 02:00 p.m. Other buses leave at 11:45 a.m and 04:30 a.m to Tilarán; a bus to Guacimal to 01:00 p.m; and another to Santa Elena de Monteverde 02:15 p.m. The buses that travel to Quepos can leave you in Jaco, departing 05:00 a.m, 11:00 a.m, 02:30 p.m and 04:30 p.m.

 

Terminal Autobuses a Boca Barranca-Doña Ana-Puerto Caldera-Mata Limón
The buses to Puerto de Caldera pass by the Doña Ana beach and Mata de Limon; they leave from the market every hour and leave the city via Central Avenue.

 

Terminal of buses to Jaco and Quepos 
The buses going to Quepos, they can leave it in Jaco, exits 05:00 a.m, 11:00 a.m, 02:30 p.m and 04:30 p.m.

 

How to get around
The bus that has the sign “Ferry” goes up Central Avenue via the Andrea Pharmacy and then heads towards the Ferry terminal, 1.5 km from the center. The price of the taxis from the San José terminal in Puntarenas to the ferry terminal costs 2 US$.

 

By Boat
There are several car ferries that depart from the extreme northeast pier of the city; the residents call it the point, and drivers that head this way will find signposts showing the way. The ferry goes to Paquera or to Naranjo Beach, on the Nicoya Peninsula. Those that wish to go to the beaches on the extreme south of the Peninsula, Montezuma and Mal País, need to board the Ferry to Paquera and then take a bus. Those that go to the rest of the Peninsula need to board the ferry to Naranjo Beach to then take a bus to Nicoya. Drivers will need to do the same, because the road between Paquera and Naranjo Beach is a regular gravel road.

 

Ferry Coonatramar + 506 2661-1069 + 506 2661-9011, https://coonatramar.com/ timetable from Puntarenas to Naranjo 06:00 a.m, 10:00 a.m, 02:20 p.m, 07:00 p.m, timetable Naranjo to Puntarenas 07:30 a.m, 12:30 p.m, 05:00 p.m, 09:00 p.m. On the ferry journey you will be able to see the famous island of the lonely men, San Lucas Island, an old prison, and then Naranjo beach; you can also go by land to the beaches of Guanacaste.

Activities and Festivities
The festivals of the Virgen del Mar are during the second week of July, where you can enjoy traditional food, seafood dishes, artistic expressions and on the 16th of July, the day of the Virgin, there is a boat parade with ships that have been artistically decorated. The carnivals every year, take place February, the city is dressed in happiness, art, music dance and all the colors of a carnival that go through the main roads of the city and the Paseo de los Turistas, where you can enjoy processions, floats, outside concerts, food, and all the happiness and hospitality of the village of  Puntarenas.
